Working from the Heart, For the Heart
Date: February 17, 2021
PLH Group employees deliver industry leading, energy-focused solutions. Their work impacts homes and businesses throughout North America by ensuring efficient and reliable electric power through transmission and distribution systems, constructing and maintaining pipeline infrastructure, and providing emergency power relief to areas devastated by natural disasters. As experts in this complex and intricate work, PLH Group employees deliver professional services with genuine integrity and transparency. However, working from the heart is not their only focus. They also work for the heart– that is, the human heart.
February is American Heart Month. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one person in the United States dies every 36 seconds from cardiovascular disease. Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States experiences a heart attack. Though these statistics may sound startling, there is something we can do to lower these numbers– something we can all do. Family, friends, and employees play a major role in the heart health of individuals.
“Our employees are our number one value every day. If a job cannot be completed without maintaining or improving their overall wellness, then the job is reassessed,” said Elsie Bentley, vice president of Safety, Health, and Environmental at PLH Group. “Teamwork is emphasized on all of our job sites, which not only improves our overall services provided, but also ensures the safety and health of all workers and visitors.”

PLH Group leads the energy industry in construction services and solutions, from overhead power transmission and distribution work to the installation, construction, and maintenance of underground pipeline transportation systems. This work not only requires expertly trained professionals, but also diligent attention to tasks and processes. Employees work with a passion and commitment to integrity and quality. Most importantly, though, they deliver these services safely.
“Our entire team — which includes all of our business units — is committed to our safety and health program. This robust program identifies and mitigates risks to the wellness of our employees. This, of course, includes heart health,” added Elsie. “Especially during National Heart Month, we work with our employees to not only detect job site risks to their heart, but also how to establish overall healthier lifestyles.”
Ways PLH Group maintains and improves heart health of employees includes:
- Training employees on the impacts of overexertion and how to prevent it on the job site
- Managing mental health, especially during times of elevated stress
- Establishing active employee lifestyles, both on and off the job site
- Teaching employees how to recognize signs of heart attack, stroke, and cardiac arrest
- Routinely training employees on first aid and emergency response
