Winterizing Our Mindset
Date: December 5, 2019

As the days get shorter and the air’s chill gets colder, workers across North America are preparing for the upcoming winter season. For some workers, preparation involves adding an extra layer of clothing. Others, though, must be ready to work in below freezing wind chills, significant snow accumulation, and icy surfaces. PLH Group understands the significant potential for injury and illness during winter months, and encourages all of its workers to not only winterize their homes, vehicles, and worksites, but also their safety mindset.
Prepare for anticipated weather. Check and understand forcasted weather conditions prior to your shift. Prepare yourself and your equipment for anticipated conditions. If additional warm-weather clothing and gear are needed, ensure that they are appropriate for the safety of the day’s work tasks. Additionally, talk with your supervisor about limiting time exposed to winter conditions that have the potential to cause cold-related health hazards.
Prepare vehicles. Understand recommended vehicle winterization and emergency preparedness. This includes operation of personal vehicles, as well as company vehicles and large construction equipment. If you are unsure of the operation of these vehicles in winter conditions, talk with your supervisor and team members.
Ensure integrity of tools and equipment. Cold weather has the potential to compromise the integrity of the tools and equipment that are used on a daily basis.
Additionally, extra clothing workers may be wearing could impede worker safety during some tasks. Therefore, discuss integrity of tools and equipment in extreme temperatures or work environments, as well as usage safety, during pre-job briefs.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides vital tips for winterizing your home, as well as other cold-weather safety considerations and precautions.
PLH Group cares about the wellness of its workers both at home and on the jobsite. By approaching the upcoming months with a winterized mindset, workers will protect their health and safety, as well as the wellness of their coworkers, friends, and family.
